Larabars are one of our favorite go-to snacks whenever we go biking. For long rides, sometimes we pack two or three each. We’ve tried a lot of protein bars, but Larabars stand out as by far the best. Not only are they high in protein, but they are actually really good for you and most of the flavors perform well in terms of taste and texture.
While most protein/energy bars contain artificial ingredients, Larabars are only made from whole food ingredients. In addition, each bar is sweetened with dates rather than sugar, although the date flavor is very well concealed in most flavors. Josh didn’t even realize there were dates in them until I told him!
Here’s a list of our Top 3 favorite flavors.
1st place (tie) Blueberry Muffin
This one literally tastes like a blueberry muffin with a little bit of a nutty flavor from the cashews. It is by far my favorite, with real blueberries, just the right amount of sweetness, and a soft, chewable texture. It’s my go-to bar for bike rides, and I even like it as an on-the-go breakfast.
1st place (tie) Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip
The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip flavor is Josh’s favorite. This flavor is almost like a candy bar in terms of taste, vaguely reminiscent of Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup (although it is much less sweet and the chocolate and peanut flavors are combined rather than distinct). It tastes like a treat but with much more nutritional value.
3rd place Pecan Pie
Made with just three ingredients–dates, pecans, and almonds–this one definitely earns its simple, whole-food designation. The only real ding against this flavor is that it didn’t really taste like a pecan pie to me because the pecan flavor doesn’t come through very much at all. It tastes more like mildly sweet Fig Newton filling with small nut pieces throughout.
Most of the other Larabar flavors are great as well including honorable mentions Cashew Cookie, Apple Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Carrot Cake. Honestly, the only Larabar flavors we didn’t enjoy and wouldn’t buy again were the Coconut Chocolate Chew and the Mint Chocolate Chip, since the texture seemed a little bit dry and chalky.
We recommend buying in bulk on Amazon as it’s a lot cheaper than purchasing them at the grocery store.
